Direct effects of climate change on ecosystems and disturbance regimes

I. GENERAL MEETING INFORMATION
During this year’s annual workshop, we will be focusing on Theme 1 (Direct effects of climate change on ecosystems and disturbance regimes), with the goal of strengthening proposed Theme 1 research and maximizing overlap and interactions with the other Themes of our newly funded proposal. To prepare for this meeting, we ask that all participants take the time to read the recently funded LTER 16 proposal.
Specific workshop objectives:
- Discuss our new overall research plan and the opportunities for initial collaborations, research projects, and products, with a focus on Theme 1.
- Strengthen linkages between themes.
- Discuss opportunities for how modeling can support the other themes, and in particular Theme 1.
- Develop one and three-year road maps for accomplishing these goals.
Workshop format:
The workshop will include a few short presentations, mostly to facilitate discussions and group work. The remaining workshop will be dedicated to interactive communication in the form of:
- World Café*: will facilitate a discussion on supporting/enabling elements of an integrated science platform related to Theme 1.
- Panel discussion of Theme leaders will build on group ideas and generate dialogue.
- Break-out groups: will begin to design research priority activities identified during the World Cafe dialogue.
- Poster session: sharing and exchanging ongoing and planned research.
*The World Cafe is a methodology for hosting conversations about relevant questions and themes. Our goal is to create multiple conversations that build off of each other to explore issues related to Theme 1. This technique is effective in building new network connections and more deep information generation and exchange than what can be achieved with individual presentations.

8:30 - 9:45 Panel discussion: “Cross-theme linkages in the new round of LTER” - How can results from Theme 1 inform other themes, and vice versa? Panel will be comprised of Theme Leaders: Michelle Mack, Jay Jones, and Knut Kielland (Scale-dependent climate-disturbance interactions as drivers of ecological landscape change) Helene Genet (Linking landscape heterogeneity with regional and global climate feedbacks), Todd Brinkman (Coupled social-ecological dynamics for interior Alaska) and Jill Johnstone (Integrating LTER Science and resource management with regional environmental change through co-production) and the panel will also answer questions from the audience.
