Intro:
On October 8-10, 2010 the BNZ is hosting a workshop for the Maps and Locals
(MALS) project of the LTER. We'll have
about 15 visitors from 10 different LTERs across the country to talk about
efforts to integrate spatial analysis with local knowledge to understand
change. It appears to be a great group of researchers attending. All have
an interest in interdisciplinary studies of social-ecological systems and
several are national leaders in their field. The meetings are open to all
and I invite you to drop in for parts or all. Please let us know if you
plan to join us for any of the meals so we can be sure there is enough food.
(RSVP:Ellen Weiser)
We will have 15 guests participating and 10 LTER sites represented, with several UAF faculty members joining in. We are planning for day #1 to be structured presentations with some discussion and day #2 more open and focused on developing ideas and planning ahead. Below and attached are some workshop details. If you have additional questions, please write Gary (gary.kofinas@alaska.edu) or Ellen Weiser(gary.kofinas@alaska.edu), the Coordinator of our Resilience and Adaptation Program.
A few notes:
- Breakfasts on Friday and Saturday morning will be served in hotel room 201. The cost is covered by our workshop budget. The Sunday breakfast is on your own.
- The bus deaprture from the hotel to the university will be promptly at 7:45am Friday and Saturday
- Friday we will meet in room 109 Butrovich Building and on Saturday in the International Arctic Research Center / Akosofo Building room 401. Akosofo building is locked on Saturdays. If are outside and can’t get in, call room 401 with the phone in the entrance area. The number is posted.
- Field trip participants will leave the hotel at 8am on Sunday and return by 6pm. We will try to make arrangements for those wishing to join us for a half day because of departing flights.
Local contact Information:
Goals for the workshop:
1) Share individual and collective experience using local knowledge and spatial analysis (undertaken separately or in an integrated fashion) to
study social-ecological change;
2) Identify common problems and pressing science questions; develop an analytical framework for future MALS cross-site comparative analyses;
discuss the elements of a workplan for future research to make our ideas operational;
3) Develop our ideas to be produce a publishable article.
Agenda:
Click HERE for the handout that includes meeting information, participant lists, and the agenda.
You'll see that we have allocated time on day #1 for each of you to give a brief (10 minutes max!) description of MALS related studies at your site. Questions we ask that you touch on:
1) What are the critical "problems" at your site and how do they relate
to critical science questions about social-ecological systems that span all LTER sites;
2) What are your data and data limitations? Do you believe your data?
3) Do you have sufficient the expertise at your site to complete the
past and future tasks related to MALS?
Remember: 10 minutes only (followed by 5 minutes for Q &A).
Relevant Papers:
"The causes of land-use and land-cover change: moving beyond the myths" (Lambin el al 2001)
In anticipation of our need for significant funding to continue with MALS,
we will be working in breakout groups and plenary on Saturday to meet
workshop objectives #2. On Sunday we have a field trip to Chena Hot Springs
to tour its geothermal energy plant and soak. Bring walking shoes and your
bathing suit!
All Graduate Studies: We are asking that all grad students attending the
workshop please contact Colette de Roo cderoo@alaska.edu . Colette and
another UAF PhD student, Corrie Knapp, will be working with attending grad
students to collect and present student impressions of our deliberations.
She has the details.
Reading and website: We've attached a paper sent to us by John Harrington
which has relevance to MALS and the workshop. We ask that you read it. The
MALS website is found at http://www.lter.uaf.edu/bnz_MALS.cfm, which
includes the spectacular MALS posters developed by Gil and his students
presented at last year's AGA meeting in DC. Check'm out.
Budget: Our grant from the LTER Network Office will be paying for most of
your expenses once you get to Fairbanks. However, we have more people
attending than we anticipated, which is pushing our meager $11,000 budget.
To manage the expenses, we are asking that you pay for a couple of the meals
out of your own travel budget. We will cover all other expenses. See
agenda for "your expenses" for the places you will ask you to cover costs.
Weather: We have had a glorious autumn in Fairbanks and just turned the
corner towards late autumn last weekend. We have yet to receive any
significant snowfall but anticipate that it might come any day. Expect low
temps in the teens and highs in the 40s, but more importantly, expect
anything (could be warmer, could be colder, could be sunny and could snow
like crazy). Raingear, a warm hat and gloves, a heavy sweater, and good
walking shoes are advised just in case we get cold, snow and rain.
Getting from the airport to the Princess Hotel: Your hotel does not have a
free pick up service. Upon arriving, take a cab to the Princes Hotel, which
is a 10 minutes from the airport. This is one of the expenses that we ask
that you cover.
Friday Morning/ Getting to Campus: Campus is about 15 minutes from the
hotel. Two vans will pick you up on Friday and Saturday at 7:45am and take
you to UAF. In case we miss you, we're meeting in "Butrovich Building Room
109" on Friday and Akosofu Building 401 on Saturday. Both are located on
"West Ridge" of UAF. See attached agenda.
See you soon!
