| General Description |
Closed White Spruce Forest
|
| Vegetation Description |
This mature white spruce stand originated in approximately 1780 as a result of wildfire. White spruce is the dominant tree but paper birch (Betula papyrifera) forms an important part of the tree canopy although it makes up less than 25% of the canopy cover. Diameters of the dominant spruce range from 30 to 43 cm, and heights average 30 m with some individuals of 36 m. Spruce tree density in 1993 was 387/ha with a basal area of 27.7 m2/ha: paper birch density was 213/ha with a basal area of 2.3 m2/ha giving the stand a total tree density of 576 trees/ha and a basal area of 30m2/ha.
Total shrub cover in the stand is 46% with Alnus crispa ( 30% cover) and Viburnum edule (12% cover) and Rosa acicularis (4% cover) being the most important shrubs. Herbaceous and low shrub cover totaled 64% with Linnaea borealis, Equisetum arvense, Geocaulon lividum, Epilobium angustifolium, and Calamagrostis canadensis, being the most important species. The forest floor is covered by a moss mat of Hylocomium splendens and Pleurozium schreberi.
