Closed White Spruce Forest
|
| Vegetation Description |
This mature white spruce stand originated in approximately 1780 as a result of wildfire. White spruce is the dominant tree but paper birch (Betula papyrifera) forms an important part of the tree canopy although it makes up less than 25% of the canopy cover. Diameters of the dominant spruce range from 20 to 35 cm, and heights average 25 m with some individuals of 28 m. Spruce tree density in 1993 was 343/ha with a basal area of 23 m2/ha: paper birch density was 233/ha with a basal area of 9 m2/ha giving the stand a total tree density of 576 trees/ha and a basal area of 32m2/ha.
Total shrub cover in the stand is 50% with Alnus crispa ( 33% cover) and Viburnum edule (16% cover) being the most important shrubs. Herbaceous cover is approximately 10% with Epilobium angustifolium, Calamagrostis canadensis, and Lycopodium complanatum being the most important species. The forest floor is covered by a moss mat of Hylocomium splendens.
