Young Paper Birch/Shrub/Herbaceous Stand
|
| Vegetation Description |
Prior to the 1983 Rosie Creek fire this stand was a young white spruce, quaking aspen, and paper birch stand with a shrub understory of Salix bebbiana that had developed following a fire between 1910 and 1915. The 1983 Rosie Creek fire was of moderate intensity in the stand, destroying all of the above ground vegetation but leaving basal stems and root of the trees and shrubs. Much of the development of the woody species developed directly as root and stump sprouts. Vegetation development following the fire was rapid and by the end of the 1984 growing season, shrubs, primarily Salix bebbianaEquisetum arvense, Epilobium angustifolium, Geranium bicknellii, and Mertensia paniculata had cover values of 26% and 55 %. Stump and root sprouts of paper birch and aspen had a total cover of less than 4%. Mosses (Ceratodon purpureus) and liverworts(Marchantia polymorpha) had 10 % cover.By 1995 this stand had developed an open overstory of paper birch and quaking aspen with a cover of 20% and heights of 4 m. The shrub layer consisted primarily of dense clumps of Salix bebbiana and scattered Viburnum edule with a total cover of 30%. The low shrub layer was primarily Linnaea borealis with a 14% cover. Herbaceous cover had been reduced to 28% and was primarily Epilobium angustifloium and Mertensia paniculata.
