| General Description |
Woodland white spruce/Labrador tea-lingonberry/feathermoss community. Black spruce seedlings and saplings have invaded the site.
|
| Vegetation Description |
FP5B is an woodland stand of white spruce with numerous small paper birch and a scattering of black spruce. Total tree canopy is only 22%. Tree density totals 2200 trees per hectare of which 1400 are paper birch, mostly saplings and a few larger trees, 675 white spruce and approximately 100 black spruce. Total basal area of the stand is 13.8 m2/ha or which 12.1 is white spruce. Average diameter of the spruce is 20 cm. White spruce in the stand are about 200 years old; the black spruce about 130 years. Remains of large trees on the ground suggest that the present stand may be a second or third generation, but no evidence of fire was observed in the stand.
The tall shrub layer is sparse (13% cover) and is primarily of Rosa acicularis, Salix glauca, Salix planifolia and Salix bebbiana. The low shrub layer is conspicuous and with nearly 70% cover; mainly Ledum groenlandicum, Vaccinium vitis-idaea, and Empetrum nigrum. Common herbs are Equisetum arvense, Geocaulon lividum, and Cornus canadensis. The moss cover (40%) is dominated by Hylocomium splendens and Pleurozium schreberi. Lichens are also common (12% cover) with Peltigera aphthosa, Cladonia gracilis and C. rangiferina being the most common.

| History |
This site was initially established as a control for the Willow Island silvicultural studies in 1982. It was incorporated into the LTER structure in 1989 as a "Turning Point 5" site because the stand is transitional between white and black spruce.
|
| Directions |
From the landing at the north side of Willow Island follow the slough beyond the clear cut (Unit 1) to the midpoint of the control on the east. Turn east for approximately 100 m.
