| Vegetation Description |
This stand is open with only 520 spruce/ha and a basal area of 36 m2/ha. There is a small component of paper birch (Betula papyrifera) in the stand with a density of 80/ha and a basal area of 3.8m2/ha.
Alder, both Alnus tenuifolia and A. crispa are the dominant tall shurbs with a density of 7000 /ha and basal area of 3.5 m2/ha. Rosa acicularis and Viburnum edule are also common with a total cover of about 20%. the herbaceous and low shrub layer has a cover of about 40% and includes Equisetum arvense, Cornus canadensis and Equisetum scirpoides. Other herbs, with low cover values include Calamagrostis canadensis, Pyrola segunda, Goodyera repens and Listera cordata. The sub shrubs include Vaccinium vitis idaea and Linnaea borealis.
Feathermosses, especially Hylocomium splendens, form a nearly continuous moss mat except under individual birch trees where the leaf litter is more abundant. Several other mosses and liverworts are common in the moss stratum . The foliose lichens, Peltigera aphthosa and P. canina are scattered in the moss mat.
