Field Trips

  • APEX - Peatland Demonstration Site Turetsky/Harden/McGuire

We have conducted tours of the site for Dr. Steve Carpenter, for an IARC summer school courses, for Congressional staffers on a USGS field trip, and for several international scientific conferences.

  • Disturbance and Plant Successional Patterns Hollingsworth/Johnstone/Chapin/Turetsky

As part of our research, we have also established four demonstration sites at CPCRW that are specifically intended for education and outreach activities. These sites are easily accessible and cover a range of fire and vegetation conditions, making them well-suited for long-term use in demonstrating the different post-fire successional trajectories that are possible in Alaskan black spruce forests. The sites were visited three times in 2008, twice with undergraduate students as part of ESA- and UNCF-funded SEEDS programs, and once with high school teachers interested in teaching about fire history. We also used these sites as the backdrop for a Artist/Scientist fieldtrip, which inspired a public performance called 'In The Time of Change' in 2008. In addition we led multiple field trip for undergraduate students to BCEF during the summer of 2008, where we examined understory and overstory vegetation in various stages of floodplain succession.

  • Strategies for Ecology Education, Development, and Sustainability (SEEDS) Field Trips

BNZ LTER conducted a class for students in ESA (Ecological Society of America) SEEDS (Strategies for Ecology Education, Development, and Sustainability) program on May 26-30, 2008, as well as for the students in the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) SEEDS program on Aug 4-8, 2008. Many LTER scientists participated in teaching and guiding students on field trips and discussions. Various topics were covered both in the classroom and on field trips e.g. Alaskan ecology and Bonanza Creek LTER, role of fire in Alaskan ecology, comparison of western science observations to Athabascan cultural traditions and how Athabascan Indians interact with their natural world.
