<title>Experimental Design</title>
<para> design Experiment is repeated at each of the replicate sites representing the respective successional stages in upland and river floodplain locations. Treatments include: control, sucrose addition, sawdust addition, fertilizer and moisture stress. The moisture stress treatment is established at only the UP2 and FP3 sites, the turning point between deciduous and coniferous tree species domination. Experimental plots are 15 m by 15 m. At sampling time, an attempt was made to sample green foliage from at least 5 individuals of each species. In mature white spruce stands fewer than five individuals were present on the experimental plots in some cases.</para>
</section>
<section>
<title>Methods</title>
<para>Sucrose and sawdust were hand broadcast on each plot. The amount of each material was calculated to be sufficient to raise the C:N ratio of the forest floor in each vegetation type to approximately 50. Following the initial applications and in the fall of each succeeding year 6 cores of the forest floor are obtained to estimate the course of the C:N ratio in order to determine the necessity for reapplication of the respective treatments. Foliage was sampled from as close as possible to the mid-crown position in each case. A pole-pruner was used for shorter individuals in early successional stages and a shotgun was used for taller trees in later successional stages. Foliage samples were divided in to those for oven drying (65o C) and chemical element, lignin and cellulose analysis and those to be freeze dried for organic secondary plant chemical analysis.</para>
