<abstract>
<para>Methane fluxes were collected at APEX rich fen during the summers of 2005 - 2011 and 2015-2016. APEX Fen is located in the Bonanza Creek LTER outside of Fairbanks, AK. APEX Fen uses a full-factorial water table (flooded or raised, lowered or drained, and control treatments, as well as a moisture gradient). A warming manipulation (warmed, unwarmed treatment) was in place in 2005-2011, but ceased by 2014. In 2015, vegetation manipulation subplots were installed within the water table treatments. This new experiment was called the Next Generation Experiment</para>

<title>Experimental Design</title>
<para>APEX Fen uses a full-factorial water table (flooded or raised, lowered or drained, and control treatments, as well as a moisture gradient in 2005-2011) by warming manipulation (warmed, unwarmed treatment) in 2005-2011. Water table treatments were randomly assigned to each plot. Permanent gas measurement collars were established within these plots and randomly assigned to a warming treatment, which had ceased by 2014. The Next Generation experiment was initiated in 2015 by E.Kane, installing a series of new plots in all three water table treatments (i.e. Control 7- 14 + NP, Lowered 5-12, NP, Raised 1, 4, 7, 8 NP). Plots Lowered 5,6 and Raised 1, 4 were repurposed into the Next Gen. Plots Control 1-6, Lowered 1-4, and Raised 2, 3, 5, 6 all remained under their original treatments in the Baseline Experiment. The Next Generation experiment involves a combination of 'sedge removal' or 'all other species removal' treatments across the three water table treatments.</para>
</section>
<section>
<title>Methods</title>
<para>FIELD: Data were collected from 18 collars located within the water table (by warming treatments in 2005-2011) at APEX Fen as described above. In 2005-2011, moisuture gradient collars range from a black spruce site (Gradient 1), a site dominated by willow-birch shrubs (Gradient 2), a tussock site (Gradient 3, located on a tussock), and a site dominated by equisetum and carex (Gradient 4). Moisture gradient measurements were discontinued by 2014, whereas the 18 collars within the water table treatments continued to be monitored in 2015. Four collars, two in the lowered plot and two in the raised plot, were not monitored in 2016, as the four were part of the Next Generation experiment installed at the end of the 2015 field season. The Next Generation experiment plots was allowed to "settle" without flux measurements during the summer of 2016. In 2019 soil collars were installed in at all Next Generation plots in May. Starting in June both the Baseline Experiment (i.e. Control 1-6, Lowered 1-4, and Raised 2, 3, 5, 6) and the Next Generation Experiment (i.e. Control 7- 14 + NP, Lowered 5-12, NP, Raised 1, 4, 7, 8 NP) were monitored. Methane samples were collected weekly to bi-weekly from clear static chambers (60 cm x 60 cm x 60 cm) placed on collars that are permanently embedded in the peat. Collars were sealed using foam tape. LAB: Gas samples were collected into 20 mL syringes over a period of 30 -40 minutes and analyzed for methane concentrations using a gas chromatograph equipped with a flame ionization detector (FID). Gas fluxes not near zero that did not show a trend (9%) were discarded.</para>
