<abstract>
<para>This table contains concentrations (ppmv) of CO2 and N2O measured at 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 cm depths below the soil surface in closed-canopy black spruce and mixed hardwood sites (@ 3 replicate sites) in the Caribou Poker Creeks Research Watershed. Samples were taken at weekly or bi-weekly intervals from two profiles in each site during growing seasons from June 1, 1999 through September 17, 2002. This period brackets the Frostfire burn of July 1999; because the fire missed the planned burn sites in mixed hardwoods, the mixed hardwood plots were moved (reflected in the site numbering in the database).</para>

<title>Experimental Design</title>
<para>This work focused on two major vegetation types occurring in the C4 watershed within the CPCRW: closed canopy black spruce (CBS sites) and mixed hardwood (MH sites). Within each, we selected three replicate burn (B) and control (C sites). The experimental Frostfire burn in July 1999 did not burn any of the planned mixed hardwood burn sites and lightly burned one of the planned black spruce burn sites. The mixed hardwood sites (1-3) were abandoned and new sites (4-6) were established in and near the actual burned areas. Also, CBS-B4 was established to replace the lightly burned CBS-B2 site. </para>

<title>Methods</title>
<para>Field methods:	Within each site, two profile samplers were inserted into holes drilled into ground just large enough to accommodate them snugly. Ground was tamped around samplers to minimize air leakage along outside of samplers.
Lab methods:	CO2 and N2O were analyzed on a Shimadzu GC14 gas chromatograph equipped with an Electron Capture Detector.
