<para>This dataset includes soil water samples (lysimeter samples) collected from mature balsam poplar (BP1, BP2 and BP3) and white spruce (FP4A, FP4B, FP4C) stands during 2000 and 2001. Five Lysimeter were installed at 12 cm and four at the 40 cm in each stand type. Water from the Tanana River and small, non-silt, streams on the eastern portion of the floodplain were collected during many sampling periods.</para>

<section>
<title>Experimental Design</title>
<para>There were three, 15x15 m replicate plots for each stand type. Replicate plots were located within LTER research sites FP4A, 4B and 4C in white spruce stands and BP1, BP2 and BP3 in balsam poplar stands.

Five tension lysimeters were installed at the 12 cm depth and four lysimeters installed at the 40 cm depth in each stand type. Lysimeter numbers (Lysimeter ND) corresponds to a specific lysimeter.

During our analysis, elemental concentrations, pH, conductivity, etc from a given depth were averaged for each plot such that each plot represented a single statistcal replicate. We employed a repeated measures analysis of variance using PROC MIXED in SAS to analyze the data.</para>

<title>Methods</title>
<para>Soil water samples were collected approximately every week during the frost-free period from August 2000 to October 2001 using Prenart tension lysimeters.

Samples were placed on ice while being transported to the lab where they were filtered to 1 um, pH and conductivity was measured and they were frozen until further analysis.

NO3 and NH4 were determined on an Alpkem segmented flow autoanalyzer. DON was determined by digesting water samples using a potassium persulfate oxidation protocol and running the digested product for NO3.

Non-nitrogen anions and cations were determined on an ion chromatograph. DOC was determined on a TOC analyzer.</para>
