Experimental Forests
Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest is one of 77
experimental forests, watersheds and
ranges in the country.
Experimental forests provide protected areas to perform long-term research on
Forest Service lands. The first experimental forests established in the 1940s
were dedicated to research and demonstration in forest and range management, now
experimental forest research encompasses watershed management, wildlife, fire,
recreation, ecology.
Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest is unique because it is located on land owned by the State of Alaska.
Only two experimental forests in the northwest are also Long-Term Ecological Research sites;
Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest and
H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest in Blue River, Oregon.
Research
has been conducted at Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest for over 40 years through partnership with the State
of Alaska, University of Alaska Fairbanks,
National Science Foundation and the
USDA
forest service.
