Field Trip "E"

Fire management in interior Alaska

Led by:
  • Randi Jandt, Alaska Fire Service Fire Ecologist
  • Kent Slaughter, Assistant Fire Management Officer, Alaska Fire Service
Join fire managers and researchers for an introduction to interagency fire management and research in Alaska. The trip will involve a visit to fire management facilities, an introduction to the Alaska Interagency Wildland Fire Management Plan, and a visit to a prescribed fire site where there is ongoing research in fire effects. We'll discuss the fire environment, the Alaska fire season, the history of fire management in Alaska, challenges facing Alaska fire managers, and fire research. The field trip will include a walk through a recent prescribed fire and demonstrations of some of the tools and techniques used in fire management. Participants will need to be prepared to walk up to one mile over flat, uneven terrain. Depending on the weather there may be an opportunity to observe a small prescribed burn in progress.
